SUIT CARE IN
10 SIMPLE STEPS

STEP 1
STEP 1

Get the right size

Make sure you buy the right size suit. A tight suit would put unnecessary tension on the cloth causing the fabric to wear out over time.

STEP 2
STEP 2

Buy spare trousers

Trousers are the first to wear out, so buying an extra pair is advisable. The more you alternate, the longer would be the life of the suit.

STEP 3
STEP 3

Avoid using internal pockets

Do not over load the inner pockets with heavy keys and thick wallets. Cotton pockets tend to get ruined and the linings split easily. It makes the garment look clumpy, eventually losing its shape.

STEP 4
STEP 4

Use a steam iron

Keep your suits crease free by ironing them with a steam iron. However, be careful with the heat temperature as due to the exposure of high heat an iron can damage the fibres of your suit by causing them to melt and thus creating a shine.

STEP 5
STEP 5

Give your suit a break

Give your suit at least a day’s rest after each wear. Hang your suit with enough space on both the sides for it to breathe. Fine materials are made of natural fibres and hence require air circulation to stay fresh.

STEP 6
STEP 6

Managing Stains

The best way to counteract a fresh stain is to immediately blot the surface with a dry white cloth. Despite the inclination towards use of water and scrub the affected area, it only causes the stain to set quicker and damages the natural fibres. All stubborn stains should be addressed by your dry cleaner.

STEP 7
STEP 7

A man for all seasons

If you reside in a country with four distinct seasons, it is important to have your suits dry cleaned prior to storage and be kept in a suit bag at the beginning of spring or fall.

STEP 8
STEP 8

Invest in a clothes brush

Dust, dirt and lint can accumulate on wool. To remove lint and dust, use of a quality clothes brush would be advised. The natural bristles on the brush would expel the dust and dirt trapped in the wool. To brush your suit, start from the shoulders and work your way down. Always brush slowly, gently & never perpendicular to the fibres.

STEP 9
STEP 9

Storage

Always hang your suits upright in a closet. Give them plenty of air, and always check for insects/ moths. Cedar wood hangers work as repellents for predators such as moths, and absorb moisture.

Again, take care

Don’t make the schoolboy error of leaving your suit in a crumpled heap on the floor when you get home. Even if it is 3am and you’re not able to walk in a straight line, it is still worth the effort.
